The Home Gym

I get asked a LOT about my home gym, what’s in it, where did I get my equipment from and how it’s all designed. It served me well through the 12 Week Body Plan, and since I’ve been promising to write this post for over a year, here it is.

My gym is actually a converted garage. I got the room lined with insulated plasterboard, plastered, electrics fitted and then decorated it all myself. The floor is elevated and lined with insulated boarding and the flooring is from softfloor.co.uk and is fine for absorbing impacts of weights, doesn’t mark and is comfortable without shoes. I opted for the orange colour to keep the room warm and bright. With a lack of windows in the room I opted for a pale yellow wall paint which provides a sense of daylight. The lighting is spot lights which are bright, and with the doors closed the room feels bright, warm and natural, and comfortable to spends many hours in.

Whilst putting in the electrics I also fitted cat5 cable and TV cable into various areas so that I could get Internet or HDMI TV wherever I wanted it. I also fitted cabling for my iPod dock which now plays through the big TV. So I’ve got Sky TV and music and wired Internet in there.

The layout of the gym is designed to allow someone on the cardio machines to watch TV and face out into the room. The squat rack is in front of the big mirror to allow me to keep a close eye on form. This is the reason I have so many mirrors in the room. I also keep the 6 foot bar loaded on the floor for deadlifts. This allows me to move from other exercises straight onto deadlifts without having to move the bars around, and I keep my 25kg plates on this bar. I don’t have room for storage, so I’ve put in a few small corner shelves from Ikea for putting drinks and miscellaneous things on. For all the bits, straps, gloves, bands I’ve got an Ikea storage rack in my other garage (just the other side of the door) for which I can just slide out the box full of stuff before each workout. This keeps the room tidy and I can put it away at the end.
